The Fury of Fate by D.W. Ross
Cormag’s Folly
An Indie Book Review by Joseph Poopinski
3 Stars
This third installment of the Onyxborn Chronicles brings readers face to face with the antagonists’ divinity, Cormag himself. He’s the craftiest of blokes, however the sinister god’s far-reaching schemes may overlap a tad too much. Citing how unmitigated evil shall eventually implode probably predicts the inevitable snag in even his well-woven centuries-old plots. Ogulf has been assured multiple times that he’s pivotal to victory but maybe Feda does all the heavy lifting, unless you count his genuine friendship to Melcun.
Fun features: How Ogulf challenged Iyan to a duel in the pit of honor, thereby recruiting the Hammer Guard’s aid, delivered a much-loved classic motif. Nevea’s purple veins of pulsing magic writhing beneath her skin as her powers evolved & how she could read the book without words were tangible proofs of Cormag’s gifts. Also, when a certain man’s shadow, seemingly proportioned like Cormag, stalked through a cloud of smoke & into the mortal realm, Mag knew his wicked designs would succeed. My favorite quote: “All that lived here was death.” My favorite typo: “…spraying her wish ash…”
