Wyrd Gods by Susana Imaginário

Reverse-Demonically Possessed Goddess Copes with Amnesia & Schizophrenia
An Indie Book Review by Joseph Poopinski
4 Stars

Wyrd Gods featured various simultaneously valid & extant gods & goddesses from the world’s many mythologies. Once the cameos started, guessing who we might bump into next added a bonus fun factor. These immortals’ traditional backstories applied, however even their static reality has changed recently, declining for the worse. Why or how, I suppose, plays into the remainder of the Timelessness series (of which this is book one).

Our protagonist’s multiple identities, their histories & her purpose in the present circumstances filled my kindle with a grey area balancing act like no other. The intersecting/diverging micro- & macrocosmic aspects should sufficiently boggle any jigsaw puzzle fanatic or frazzle a shepherd with a flock of finicky felines & probably consternate a few conspiracy theorists too. No doubt I was as adrift as “Ileana” for a while but at least thrice someone refocused & summarized their best course of action to rectify the primary catastrophe. Somehow a mysterious, neo-divine tyrant had usurped the world of Niflheim, deforming it in the process, thereby creating a prison planet & destroying the only exit (a gigantic Chronodéndron tree of temporal teleportation). Humans run amok, etc.

Numerous abducted, banished or otherwise incarcerated divinities bicker & plot to escape or perhaps conquer. They have laws, but the laws have loopholes. Maybe their agendas align but personalities clash. Family issues and/or an epidemic of curses create or thwart (or both) alliances. Who has whose interests at heart, why & for how long? Several moments embodied that classic A-Team (cooperate to achieve victory) vibe plus a Matrix/Dune instant awakening but isn’t there always a catch?

Also memorable: Clever, temperature-based cursing (ex. “Frost!”) & evocative phrases such as “an infuriating personification of regal perfection.”
